I poured a cup of coffee from the urn and took it with me, making a slow circuit of the sound stage, avoiding the end set where a scene with Nikki’s twins and Griff’s stepson was taping. They were staged in a cutaway, supposedly the back of a limousine, on their way to the hospital for a visit, arguing about petty things while Griff’s life supposedly lay in limbo. One of the things I enjoyed learning when I’d first come to the soap was how the sets managed to convey things like the inside of cars and look so real on television. Yet anyone seeing this set now would marvel at the missing side of the car, lit from within to show the actor’s faces to their best advantage, and the microphones hanging on a high boom just over the roof of the car, out of camera sight. More magic.

When I’d looked for Meg, I found a note on her desk: “Across the street.” Probably sharing lunch with Borelli, this time without the added benefit of O’Malley’s company. Humph.

I waved to a few crew members, then saw Frank Resnick arguing with Ron Dowling behind a health spa set. What would that be about? I tried to edge closer but they saw me and moved deeper into the shadows. I could try to get Frank alone later and ask him indirectly about it if time allowed. Eavesdropping was my specialty as the cast and crew were used to me wandering around the sets, staying in the background.

My slow circuit took me around to the Prop Room. Gary Knowles berated one of his helpers, a burly man carrying a large oil painting by the hanging wire.

“Hold it by the frame, Emilio,” Knowles directed, pulling off his polishing gloves. He shook his head when he saw me; Emilio smiled on his way out. “The proverbial bull in a china shop,” Knowles said.

“Where’s that headed, Gary?” I perched on a stool facing his worktable.

“Over Vikki’s mantel. Dowling decided the one we have there is too bright for the mood he wanted. As if now he’s an interior decorator.” Another shake of his head.

“I just saw him in a pretty heated discussion with Frank,” I prodded. Maybe I could get the goods from Gary.

“This place will be lucky if they still have a stage manager by tomorrow. Dowling was bashing Griff Kennedy and Frank overheard him—” Knowles leaned over the table toward me, lowering his voice. “—telling a grip he was certain Griff had bedded Eva. You don’t mess with Frank when it comes to Eva.”

This was news to me but explained what I’d just seen. “I thought Frank and Eva’s relationship was pretty casual.”

“So does Eva.”
